There are very few people that can be truly called giants of their profession. Dr. Galbraith was one of those. An economist that described himself as an “evangelical Keynesian“, his book The Affulent Society laid the groundwork for the “Great Society” program passed by President Johnson. Dr. Galbraith advised presidents from FDR to Bill Clinton and many of his ideas are so ingrained in American thought that he is often compared to Henry Kissinger in terms of his influence on modern American history.

He was a sharp critic of supply-side economics, which is not surprising given that it’s the conservative antithesis to Keynesian economics. His politics often got in the way of his message. He was an unabashed liberal who pressed the Democratic party of the 60s towards it’s anti-war and “spend, spend, spend” agenda.

His influence on American society cannot be understated whether or not you agreed with his particular viewpoint. He was a polarizing figure, but any time that someone that has shaped 70 years of American history dies, his contributions should at least be noted.
