JLP at AllFinancialMatters is hosting a Question of the Day Marathon involving about 20 different sites. Today is my day to host. So here’s the question:
What was the last thing that you splurged on that you didn’t really need?
Actually, my answer will change after this weekend to a brand new shiny iPod (my birthday present). The thing before that was probably our new washer and dryer. We needed a new dryer, but we got the washer to match (plus we got side loaders, which are more economical but more expensive).

We’ve been eating out a LOT more lately.. usually because I have $60 in cash and I feel rich, so I say, let’s go out! I’ll pay. Which is why I had $200 last week and I have $1 today.
This is why I don’t like to carry cash. =P
I bought new Dansko clogs for work. I didn’t really, really need them; I could have bought cheap ‘ole shoes. However, I LOVE them and hopefully, like “they” say, the shoes should last forever!
I bought a digital camera about three weeks ago. It was my first one and it’s a great little gadget, but I definitely didn’t need it. On the other hand, it’s awesome to know immediately if the shots turned out well.
I wasted money on some self-tanning lotion that came right off when I went swimming 24 hours after applying the stuff. What a waste of $30!
I spend money on CDs all the time. I don’t really need CDs but that doesn’t stop me from buying them.
I am getting better.
aw geez, there’s so much I don’t *really* need but I can justify its existence in my life.
An iPod Shuffle because my 3rd gen iPod has a battery life of 1 hour, is heavy to wearing during a workout and the Shuffle was a refurb so not that much more than getting the battery fixed on the clunker, which is fine if it can stay plugged in.
A trip to the beach with my family to meet my bestfriend and her family. $800 for condo and expenses.
I would say my new MacBook but I think I really did need it. My iBook was over 4 years old, running so slow, un-upgradable and very limiting. ($1600)
Other than eating out too much….. Books (a couple of cookbooks), beading magazines, and a moleskine notepad.
I spent $73 at the DOLLAR STORE! Shame, shame…
I spent $70 on dinner on Tuesday night. I needed the good food and wine!
I probably buy too much wine. I certainly don’t need it!
I bought a video camera last year for $300 or so. I’ve used it once.
I bought the Precision Nutrition (http://precisionnutrition.com/system.html) program by Dr. John Berardi for $100 last week because I like his articles on sports nutrition and training and wanted to see if his PN program was much different from the other fitness-oriented nutrition plans. I was drawn in by the promise of customization and individualization. Since I am already well-grounded in the tenets of healthy nutrition for fat loss and muscle gain, this was definitely a “want,” not a need.
Always food, dining out. But I bought two tech books last week. I paid cash this time instead of credit and I can write them off my taxes.
The last truly “I shouldn’t have done that” item was a Lilly Pulitzer ribbon skirt in February.
I bought *another* Bose I-pod sound dock. The first was a bit overboard, but the second was such a good deal!
It is black like our Bose Wave radio.
July I made some extra $ selling a real estate contract- so I thought I’d celebrate with a girls weekend to Reno (friends live there). Of course, when I got back, I had to repair my truck, as well as fork out money to move (to save money ironic, right?). Now I’m kicking myself for my girls weekend- isn’t that how it goes? Oh well, seeing the Chip N Dales is my one consolation…(wink) Now back to making money… lol
I spent $150 on a pair of kasil jeans this month. Definitely a splurge that I didn’t need but the fit is perfect!
I burned $35 paying for dinner for my father and sister. I then burned $20 pitching in for gas(I commute with my father/sister. Pitching in is completely optional, but I feel obligated, damned if my sister ever donated.)
I then burned another $40 on a movie and 2 meals for a good friend(I owe him for rides/bailing my ass out).
Honestly, it feels like I only spend foolishly when it’s covering meals and gas etc. for people I feel I owe.
Yet another Coach bag. I can justify it–it’s a backpack style, much easier to tote around on a couple of upcoming trips (Vegas and Disneylad). Oh, and I guess trips to Vegas and Disneyland, too
I haven’t splurged in a long time because I’ve spent the past 2 yrs saving for a house. However, I am about to go on a spending rampage and furnish/paint every room within the next year or so.
Oh yea, for my birthday this year, I’m treating myself on a 10 day cruise in the Carribean.
All of which I need because I’ve deprived myself for sooooo long.
I got a glorious 24″ flatscreen computer monitor that I “sorta” need for work, but not really, for my birthday in May…
Music, music, music - I bought two CDs online ‘cos I couldn’t get them here. Well, I may have been able to get them if I’d been prepared to wait, but who wants to wait?
I’m spurgling on a road trip next weekend and a weekend seminar in September - my father gave me the tickets to the seminar as a birthday present, but I have to pay for the flights and accomodation. Great gift but I wouldn’t spend the money otherwise. *sigh*
My girlfriend and I took a weekend and went to the Oregon coast, stayed at a Casino and did a little gambling. Not including hotel and food, we only lost $5.
Bought a $99 flash memory card for a camera I still havent bought yet !
Dinner for two at Restaurant 301 in Eureka, CA! $129, but that’s just for the food since we rarely drink and were too full for dessert.
Tow hitch for my truck…
I just got back from purchasing a 19inch flat screen television for my bedroom. Cost - $379 pre-tax
50 bucks on golf Friday…
100 degrees…
Shot an 85…
Bad course, poor swings, hot as hades…
Yep, I’d say that’s a waste of money…
Of course, a bad day golfing is stil way better than a good day of working…

Five of my favorite brand of T-shirts because they were on sale for $9. A J Crew jacket off of eBay. Like c above, I, too, love Coach bags, but I get them for $40-$60 off of eBay. Still, it’s a splurge if I don’t really need them.
Nothing big that I can think of, but I’ve definitely treated myself to ice cream or frozen coffee drinks, etc, too often this summer…
We tend to splurge on ice cream. A lot more than two people should.
A new all-in-one printer last week, which helped justify the Costco membershop, or the new vacuum cleaner today which my wife says we really need. The old one still works but it has an annoying problem that can’t cheaply be fixed.
My cell phone. I love to have the newest Palm Treo on the market, though the old one is always enough to get me buy.
