I’d probably be thrown out of office quickly for punching members of Congress.
I’ve listened to the past few hearings he has attended in front of various committees and subcommittees. They always ask the same questions and they’re all politically loaded. They always start with “In your opinion, would it be a good idea if…” and then go on to something that is so completely obvious that I would just run up and punch the Congressman.
Today’s hearing was on the long-term health of the Federal Government and Social Security in particular. Several members of the committee asked if it would be a good idea to stop raiding Social Security to pay for the deficit (well, duh). Democrats blamed the deficit on Bush’s tax cuts, Republicans blamed the deficit on al Queda, but both sides could agree that the deficit was a bad thing and that we should stop raiding Social Security.
Well, that’s all well and good. Where’s the bill that will do just that? Oh, wait. That would require Congress to do something and stop pretending everything is okay and make some hard decisions. And we all know that ain’t going to happen.
Instead, we’ll get lame bills that will mess with Social Security but still use the surpluses it throws off until they turn around and then we’ll be up a creek without a paddle. Which is exactly why I estimate zero social security income for my retirement. I don’t trust Congress to get this right.
But at least we’ll get to listen to Congressmen ask dumb questions of the Fed Chairman for the next twenty years.
