Amazon.com ordered to stop shipping books free in France.
Apparently, the booksellers union charged that Amazon was violating France’s law that books may not be discounted more than 5% under MSRP by waiving shipping charges on cheaper books. The union also received €100,000 for their trouble.
Amazon can comply or face fines of €1,000 per day for every day that they continue to sell books below the mandated threshold. If I was Amazon and there was no escalation of the penalty, I’d simply pay the penalty and keep my free shipping offer active. They can certainly afford it and it will probably get them more business than the fine amount.
