I am an accountant and freelance writer living in St. Louis. I am married with a young child. I have previously written under the noms de plume of Left of the Middle and The Investimist. The entire Investimist archives are available on this site, but the Left of the Middle archives were lost in a hacker attack on my Movable Type Installation.

Politically, I am a pro-life liberal that believes generally in smaller government. Got it? Basically, I believe that the Federal Government should back off unless there is an overarching need that can only be met by an entity the size of the Federal Government. The liberal part comes in because I generally believe that the Federal Government needs to interfere more than a true conservative or libertarian would. I truly believe in an expansive view of the rights of a state to regulate its own backyard and am generally appalled when Congress uses interstate commerce as a stick to regulate everything. However, there are certainly areas that the Federal government needs to regulate.

Religiously, I am more Sojourners than Southern Baptist. I do believe that abortion is morally wrong, but I also believe that capital punishment is wrong. I believe that not doing everything we can to alleviate poverty is wrong. I believe that peaceful means will almost always end better than going to war at the slightest provocation. I believe that we should protect the Earth and not rape it for every ounce of raw material we can find.

Economically, I am fairly conservative. This goes for both government and personal finance. I do believe that lower taxes are better, but I also believe that taxes are a necessary evil to pay for the lives we have. I believe you should pay your fair share of taxes, whatever the government currently levies. If you believe you should pay less, change the government don’t cheat.
