Welcome to Blogging, Economist

I’ve written often about my love for the Economist newspaper. Now, the paper has moved into 2007 and turned several of its most popular columns into blogs.
Fear not loyal readers. Bagehot and Lexington are not disappearing from the paper, they are simply adding to the information in the paper with blog posts.
Go ahead and subscribe [...]

ha-HA!

The title should sound like Nelson from the Simpsons.
See, there’s this blog of “manly men” that enjoy shooting things and making fun of girly liberals. We’re not going to name names, but they post from the manly deserts of Arizona. Then there’s this blog written by a lefty that really can’t stand the thought of shooting things and would [...]

WordPress 2.7 Will Rock Your Socks Off

I was really hard on Automattic and the launch of WordPress 2.5. I went so far as to install the Fluency Admin plugin so that I didn’t use the admin panel unless I had to (using IE at work). I even installed Movable Type and Textpattern on my Macbook (using the indispensable MAMP) to see [...]

Why I’m Not a Fan of Wordpress 2.5

A couple of weeks ago I mentioned that I upgraded to WordPress 2.5 and that I wasn’t sure about the new interface. Raj Dash at Performancing shortly thereafter put up a post “Why I hate WordPress 2.5“. While hate is a strong word, I definitely agree with a lot of his points.
One of the big [...]

Quick and Dirty Logo Generator

Need a logo but don’t have hundreds (or thousands) to drop on one? HP has a service called Logomaker that will allow you to run through a set of icons and fonts and create your own logo. You’ll have to create a login to use it, but you can use it for free on a limited basis or pay $49 to have control over the logo.

Google Referrals 2.0

I hope to have a longer post at a later date, but I’ve taken a quick look at Google’s new Referrals product. It’s a bit different than what I think of affiliate or referral programs. Most programs allow you to include a code in a link that tracks the person as coming from you in [...]

Helvetica Turns 50

One of the reasons that I love reading Kevin’s blog is that he’s an unabashed geek about certain things where there is no geek cachet to be had. He’s willing to point to a BBC article celebrating the 50th birthday of the Helvetica font.
While I prefer serif fonts, especially Georgia and Century Schoolbook, for printed [...]

Way to Kill Traffic #1

The Realtor.com website allows frequent users to establish a login so that they can save searches and get e-mailed results from these searches. Generally, the website is pretty clean and user friendly. Searching for homes is right at eye level on the screen and is brightly colored. The other frequently used tools are below that [...]

30 Tips Every Blogger Should Know

Lorelle Van Fossen from Lorelle on Wordpress has a fantastic guest article at Problogger on 30 writing tips that every blogger should know. Basically, the article goes through 30 tips that apply to writing in general but apply especially to bloggers. I don’t follow all of these tips as many of my posts are written and edited [...]
